Got your attention? It seems like the next sexy thing for solid wood furniture is a grey stain, and there is more to it than just 50 shades! People are experimenting with all shades of grey – from cool greys to warm, to driftwood shades to charcoal and even some so dark it’s almost black. The beauty of grey is that it is a neutral colour without any red undertones; grey is appealing to most people because it allows other wood tones in the space to coordinate. Perfect for the person who already has variety of wood stains in the space!
Lighter shades of grey are wonderful in combination with whites, denim and sky blues and even warm linen colors for a coastal beach look. Add seashells and some warn and sun bleached accessories and you’ll feel like you’re at the cottage all year round! Darker shades are stronger but neutral at the same time, these shades can be easily transitioned into a contemporary or formal space. Wonderful for a large dining table with cool grey upholstered dining chairs. Try your light or dark shades of grey furniture with peacock blue, sunflower yellow, or tangerine accents. Very fresh!
Painted grey furniture is also a nice neutral addition to a space that has committed to a couple of wood stain colors already. Be careful though as grey has a variety of undertones that can be either cool or warm. Cool greys have hints of blue while warm greys have a mushroom tint. Also note that greys can have a hint or purple which pushes you into having purple accents. My top picks for grey walls these days are Benjamin Moore’s “Wish” or “Moonshine”. If you haven’t heard of “Revere Pewter” have a look at that one too.
Upholstery is also getting in on the action. A warm, plush, grey sofa with a small, square arm is very current and the colour makes it very easy to change décor around. Add pacific blue toss cushions for a spark of wow!
